Random

My husband and I were talking about wine over dinner tonight, and we veered off into talking about the movie Sideways, and from there about someone he had had lunch with today who was from the wine country.

It made me remember a trip I took there many years ago with my first husband a year of so before he died.  We had gone to San Francisco for a vacation and after spending several days in the city decided to go to wine country.  We got a rental car in the city, ordered the least expensive since we were paying for costly infertility treatments and trying to watch our pennies.  When we got our car it was a convertible!  It was all they had available so we only had to pay the compact rate.  It was the perfect car for our trip but an extravagance we never would have allowed ourselves (unless we knew it was one of our last trips together).  After the wine country we went to Big Sur and Pebble Beach.  Wonderful trip and that car gave it a little extra zip.

I can go back through my memories and find other moments like that, something little, that made a moment just a little bit more special.

He had received a pretty important patent, and as all you engineers out there know, you don't own your ideas.  We got a gift certificate to a very fancy, schmancy restaurant which was very nice and as a surprise they served us their special raspberry souffle for desert.  Again, just a little thing but it made our evening kind of special.

I remember him sending his mother a big bouquet for her birthday (they had had an up and down relationship due to an abusive stepfather).  It turned out that she had invited a group of friends over for her birthday and she was so proud of him remembering her birthday and sending the bouquet.  Sadly, a few months later she died and a few more after that he died.  I know how happy he was when she called to thank him.

I'm thinking maybe in heaven, there's a sort of conceirge who takes care of these little things.
